Bekodian Pond, located in the Choman district of the Balakayety region in Erbil province, is the highest lake in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
The pond sits atop Hasari Sakran Mountain, offering breathtaking views at an elevation of over 3,200 meters. Despite its remote location and lack of road access, adventurous mountaineers and curious tourists are attracted to the beauty of this remarkable lake.
To reach the highest tourist site in the Kurdistan Region, you must first drive for two hours from Erbil to Choman. From there, you will embark on a seven to ten-hour hike to reach Bekodian Pond. Surprisingly, The pond is named after the Bekodian family, who live in Rezena village in the Sarkapkan subdistrict of Ranya town. During the summer, the Bekodyan family takes their herd to graze in the area. They were the first ones to discover the pond. Kawa Gardi, a tourist from Erbil, shared his experience of visiting the pond last year in August. After a ten-hour walk, he found the weather to be reminiscent of early spring and quite cold at night. In contrast to Erbil’s scorching 52-degree Celsius temperature, the experience was truly amazing for him.
“This year I came back in August just to experience it at a different time. It is unbelievable at all times.” Kawa told Kurdaily
Laurento, a visitor from Romania, explained to Kurdaily that they drove to Przhe, which is a 30-minute drive from Choman, and then began walking to the pond. Laurento frequently visits the area because it provides clean air and water, benefiting both his health and mind.
Tourists have the opportunity to join an increasing number of mountaineer groups in the Kurdistan Region. In every city, there are now at least two mountaineer groups that organize weekly visits to the pond.
