The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has confirmed that multiple drone attacks targeted locations across the Kurdistan Region late Thursday, raising concerns about the durability of the recently announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
In an official statement released Friday, the KRG’s Ministry of Interior reported that several drones were launched at different times and locations throughout the Region. According to the statement, all incoming drones were successfully intercepted or brought down before causing major damage.
“On Thursday, at several different times, several drone attacks were carried out on several different locations in the Kurdistan Region, which fortunately were destroyed and brought down,” the ministry said.
Escalation Despite Ceasefire
The incidents come less than 24 hours after a ceasefire agreement was announced between Washington and Tehran, aimed at halting hostilities following months of escalating tensions linked to the broader U.S.–Israel conflict with Iran.
Despite the truce, residents in multiple areas reported hearing explosions late Thursday night and into early Friday morning, indicating continued security threats in the Region.
KRG authorities emphasized that the attacks undermine ongoing efforts to stabilize the situation and de-escalate tensions across Iraq and the wider Middle East.
Scale of the Attacks
According to data compiled by Kurdaily, a total of 703 drones and missiles have been launched toward the Kurdistan Region since the outbreak of the conflict on February 28.
The attacks have resulted in:
- 17 fatalities
- 92 injuries
These figures highlight the sustained nature of the threat faced by the Region over recent months.
Suspected Perpetrators
While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the latest attacks, Kurdish officials have consistently attributed such operations to pro-Iran armed factions operating within Iraq.
These groups have repeatedly targeted:
- The Kurdistan Region
- U.S. military and diplomatic interests
Their actions are widely viewed as part of a broader regional strategy linked to Iran’s network of allied militias.
KRG Calls for De-escalation
In its statement, the KRG reiterated its commitment to neutrality and regional stability.
“We emphasize support for peace and stability and call on all parties to end these attacks and no longer target Kurdistan’s stability and citizens’ interests,” the Interior Ministry stated.
Kurdish leadership has repeatedly stressed that the Kurdistan Region is not a party to the conflict and has taken measures to ensure that its territory is not used to launch attacks against neighboring countries, including Iran.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue
The ceasefire agreement, brokered through international mediation, includes a temporary halt in military operations and a framework for further negotiations.
Diplomatic talks are scheduled to begin in Islamabad on Saturday, where representatives are expected to address:
- De-escalation mechanisms
- Security guarantees
- Regional stability measures
Recent drone attacks in the Kurdistan Region have raised serious security concerns, as multiple UAVs targeted key locations despite ongoing ceasefire efforts. These Kurdistan drone attacks are believed to be carried out by pro-Iran armed groups, continuing a pattern of escalation that has affected regional stability. Since the beginning of the conflict, hundreds of drones and missiles launched at Kurdistan have resulted in casualties and infrastructure risks. The KRG has condemned the attacks, emphasizing that Kurdistan is not part of the conflict and calling for an immediate end to all military actions threatening the Region’s security and civilians.
However, the continuation of drone attacks casts uncertainty over the effectiveness of the ceasefire and raises questions about the ability of all parties to fully control affiliated armed groups on the ground.
Growing Regional Concerns
Security analysts warn that continued violations of the ceasefire could:
- Prolong instability in Iraq
- Increase risks to civilians
- Complicate diplomatic negotiations
For the Kurdistan Region, the priority remains protecting its population and maintaining stability amid a volatile geopolitical environment.
