US President Joe Biden welcomed Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani to the Oval Office on Monday, expressing gratitude for Sudani’s efforts to bolster Iraq’s economy and energy independence. This visit marks Sudani’s first trip to the US as prime minister. President Biden thanked Sudani for focusing on strengthening Iraq’s economy and energy independence, stating that it is a shared goal.
A closed-door meeting between the two leaders is scheduled for later in the day. The United States recently extended a waiver allowing Iraq to purchase electricity from Iran, in line with Iraq’s plan to reduce energy dependence on Iran and buy natural gas from the Kurdistan Region. This waiver enables Iraq to circumvent US sanctions on Iranian exports.
Earlier on Monday, Sudani and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed economic aspects and investment opportunities for American companies, particularly in the energy sector, as well as expanding partnerships with the Iraqi private sector in crucial areas for the Iraqi market and mutual cooperation. Sudani emphasized to Biden that their meeting holds significance for US-Iraq bilateral relations, stating, “This visit marks an important turning point in the relationship between our two countries.”
Moreover US President Biden assured Iraqi Prime Minister Sudani of Washington’s commitment to the security of their personnel and partners in the region, emphasizing the critical nature of the US-Iraq partnership.
He highlighted the collective efforts in defeating ISIS and the importance of the existing Strategic Framework Agreement, which aims to normalize relations between Baghdad and Washington through long-term cooperation in various areas.Sudani expressed the goal of establishing a sustainable and comprehensive relationship with the United States, transitioning from a focus on military and security to encompassing economic, political, environmental, educational, and security partnerships under the Strategic Framework Agreement.
He noted the significant victory against ISIS, achieved through the unity of the Iraqi people, international support, and sacrifices.Although ISIS suffered territorial defeats in Iraq and Syria, the group still poses security risks through periodic attacks and abductions in certain regions.
