Late on Thursday, the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani province experienced an attack, as local official confirmed to Kurdaily. No casualties have been reported thus far. According to a security source, the Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) plants of Khor Mor, which Dana Gas operates, were targeted in the town of Chamchamal, Sulaimani.

The electricity ministry announced on Friday that they halted gas delivery to power plants in the Kurdistan Region as a safety measure following an attack on the Khor Mor gas field. This incident resulted in a decrease of 2,800 megawatts (MW) in electricity generation.
The electricity ministry said that as “the situation normalizes, the electricity production will return to normal.”
US Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski condemned the attack on the Khor Mor Gas field.
Romanowski expressed condemnation for the attack on Khor Mor in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR) that occurred yesterday. She highlighted that the attack resulted in infrastructure damage and exposed millions of people to power outages during the winter season.
Romanowski emphasized that the United States stands in solidarity with their partners in Iraq, including the IKR, to support Iraqi sovereignty and security.
The electricity ministry issued a statement stating that a fire broke out in the Kor mor gas field at 10:22 pm on January 25th, 2024. In order to ensure the safety of both employees and the field, they made the decision to suspend gas exports to all power plants. This resulted in a reduction of over 2800 MW in electricity production.
According to Dana, the gas field produces 452 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Pro-Iranian groups have claimed responsibility for the majority of drone strikes targeting military bases housing US troops. These attacks are as retaliation for Washington’s support for Israel during its conflict with the Gaza Strip.
In the past few years, there have been multiple rocket attacks on the Khor Mor gas field. Despite ongoing security threat, Dana Gas stated in 2022 that they would be capable of meeting Kurdistan’s entire gas requirements within two years. According to Dana Gas, the Khor Mor field currently produces 452 million standard cubic feet of gas every day.
