In a announcement, Erbil’s governor revealed that the city of Paris has decided to honor the bravery of the Peshmerga forces by naming a street after them.
According to a statement from the Peshmerga Ministry’s media office, the decision was announced during the 44th International Congress of Francophone Countries in Lausanne, Switzerland.
During a recent conference, Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw met with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. Hidalgo acknowledged France’s admiration for the bravery and sacrifices of the Peshmerga, and expressed their intent to honor them by naming a street in Paris after them. Khoshnaw and Hidalgo also discussed ongoing restoration efforts of the Erbil Citadel, with France committing to participation in the project.The KRG was officially invited to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics.
This tribute follows the signing of a “friendship and coordination” deal between Erbil and Paris in 2019.The Peshmerga, a key ally in the fight against ISIS between 2014 and 2017, received international recognition for their resilience and military prowess.
Their efforts were instrumental in preventing the terrorist group’s territorial expansion.The strong relationship between Kurds and France dates back decades. French leaders have historically shown solidarity with the Kurdish people, supporting their struggle for autonomy and self-determination. This latest tribute is a testament to the deep-rooted connection between the two regions. The street naming ceremony is expected to take place in the near future.
