Sergeant Baptiste Gauchot, a French soldier deployed in the Kurdistan Region, lost his life in a car accident near Erbil.
France’s armed forces ministry announced on Friday that Sergeant Baptiste Gauchot tragically lost his life in Iraqi Kurdistan due to a traffic accident that occurred during a training mission. Following the incident, Sergeant Gauchot underwent emergency surgery at an Erbil hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.
Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, expressed sadness upon learning about the tragic death in Iraq. Due to a traffic accident,” according to a statement from the Elysee Palace. The statement also mentioned that the President “shares the grief of the family and loved ones”
Another French soldier who accompanied him was also critically injured and is receiving treatment at a Baghdad military hospital.
Macron “reaffirmed his support for the Iraqi people and authorities and France’s determination to continue to work alongside them. In order to train their security forces who are fighting terrorism” in the statement.
The Kurdish leaders expressed their deep sorrow and mourn the passing of a French soldier near Erbil.
Upon receiving the news of Gauchot’s demise, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani extended his condolences to the family of Gauchot, as well as to President Macron and the French people.
President Barzani conveyed his deep appreciation for the unwavering support and assistance provided by the French military within the framework of the International Coalition Forces Against ISIS . He emphasized the continued dedication of the French military in providing crucial aid and support to Kurdistan.
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also extended his condolences. He expressed solidarity with the French government and people in mourning the loss of Gauchot. He also conveyed his sincere wishes for the swift recovery of the wounded soldier presently undergoing treatment in Baghdad. The Region stands united in grief and support during this difficult time.
