The Kurdistan Region Statistics Office on Tuesday announced in a press conference that the Kurdistan Region’s population will exceed 6.5 million by end of this year, excluding refugees.
According to the government’s statics, The number of men in Kurdistan currently stands at 3,296,240, while the number of women at 3,260,240, making the male gender the majority of the population.
Based on the details provided by The KRG Statistics Office the 78.4 percent of the Kurdistan Region’s population lives in urban areas, meanwhile 21.6 percent lives in rural areas.
Kurdaily has learned that The population growth rate for 2023 is at two percent.
Erbil remains the most populated and largest city in Kurdistan Region, with population of 1,431,580 persons.
The census, conducted over a span of several months, revealed that the population of the Kurdistan Region has now reached an estimated 6.4 million people, representing a notable increase since the last census.
The KRG statistics office also added that one of the factors affecting the demographic composition of the Kurdistan Region’s population was the presence of IDPs.
According to IOM, there were more than 1,111,000 IDPs in Iraq in 2022, of whom 694,000 resided in Kurdistan. Despite having a growth rate of two percent, Kurdistan Region’s population growing at slower rate than Iraq. Iraq ranks 35th in the list of countries with fastest population growth during 2023. The current population of Iraq currently stands at more than 45.5 million people. According to the KRG officials, Most of Iraqi IDPs live in the capital city of Erbil. The KRG officials announced that Most of Refugees residing in Kurdistan, are from Syria.
Majority of Syrian refugees live in KRG-built camps in Duhok province.
